New York City Apartments can be More Affordable with a Roommate

If you are considering moving to New York City you must be aware that New York real estate is among the most expensive in the country. For many, the cost of living in New York is simply too high and it prevents them from moving there. However, there are those who must move to New York City for either school or work and thus have no choice in the matter. It is a simple fact that New York is a hub of world activity and there are a number of reasons why people move there. While this makes it an attractive place to live, it hikes New York City rental rates up significantly more than most other places. And for those who are required to move to the city, rental prices are oftentimes a major concern.

One way for people to keep their rental rates within their means is for them to find a roommate. For some, this is a simple task because they already have a roommate in mind. For others, though, finding a roommate can be a difficult – yet financially necessary task. The following article will provide some pointers on how to proceed with getting a new roommate.

Quite frankly, you never quite know what you are going to get when you choose a roommate. Sometimes a new roommate works out just great and other times it ends up being a disaster. Unfortunately it is most often the case that you cannot predict how livable a situation will be until you get into it. There are, however, a few things you can do to ensure your roommate situation will work out as good as possible.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is to take advance measures to ensure the roommate situation will be satisfactory. This means that you should not fly by the seat of your pants and create the rules as you go. Rather, it is best to sit down with your roommate upon moving in and establish a set of rules and policies which you both agree to abide by. In many instances, it can be useful to get these rules in writing. While it may seem a little overkill to create a formal contract with a new roommate, it is perhaps the best defensive measure you can take to ensure a good living situation.

Here are a few terms which you should include in your contract with your new roommate. First off, the contract should outline who pays for what expenses. Decide who pays for items such as rent, utilities, and household cleaning supplies. Also, decide upon things such as who will perform household chores and how often they will be performed. This will ensure you are not living in a filthy house. It could also be helpful to discuss cooking if you wish to divide cooking responsibilities with your roommate.

While drafting a contract will not guarantee a perfect living situation, it will at least let your roommate know what you expect from the situation. New York City is filled with people from all corners of the earth and it is likely that you will find a roommate with a lifestyle quite different from your own. Make sure you take every precaution when moving in.

Manhattan Neighborhoods & Manhattan Apartment Rentals

If you are looking into making a move to New York City you know that you have a lot of options. Even if you have just decided to rent, finding Manhattan apartment rentals can be an overwhelming chore. This is especially true for those with little familiarity of New York City. The simple fact of the matter is that New York City is the nation’s largest metropolis, which inherently creates a lot of options for renters. So if you are considering moving to New York – or Manhattan in particular, it would serve you well to research the neighborhoods most frequently rented in. By doing so, finding Manhattan apartment rentals will be a much easier chore.

Many people begin their search for Manhattan apartment rentals in Soho. Soho is one of the more artsy districts of New York, evidenced by the fact that the Guggenheim Museum houses its downtown branch there. There are countless small shops and vendors throughout Soho and people come from all over to frequent Soho’s attractions. The downside to Soho, however, is that it is almost always packed with tourists from all over and it is difficult to fight the crowds.

The Lower East Side is another district which some people consider when searching for Manhattan apartment rentals. The Lower East Side is one of the more populous neighborhoods in Manhattan. Much of it is filled with people who have been grandfathered in from previous generations. There are many mom and pop stores throughout this neighborhood which are reminiscent of times of old. Apartment rentals in the Lower East Side are easy to find due to the large quantity of rentals.

The West Village – or Greenwich Village as it is frequently called is also a popular place to look for Manhattan apartment rentals. Greenwich Village has been home to many artists and eccentric individuals but it has recently been occupied more and more by people from all walks of life. The West Village is one of the more quaint areas of New York City and many people enjoy it for its beauty and peaceful atmosphere. There is a lot of wonderful architecture in the West Village and no shortage of terrific apartment rentals there.

The Theater District is probably the area which most people think of when they think of New York City. However, living near Times Square is not the most realistic thing to do. The problem is that there are a lot of people, most of which are tourists. And with tourists, you can count on them walking very slowly. This is fine for tourists but it makes for a difficult situation when trying to get around town. The plus side to living in the Theater District is that it is relatively safe since it has been cleaned up.

Living in New York City definitely provides renters with a nearly endless supply of options. Merely deciding to move to New York is but the beginning. Finding the right neighborhood for your Manhattan apartment rental is a big job in and of itself.
